Kung fu means hard work, wushu means the art of conflict  Though the origion of kung fu is still unknown it was developed in China around the 5th Century BCE.  Both were developed in China and both are frequently confused with one another.  Both are still used today and a symbol of Chinese cultural.  There is the traditional version of both, the one that you mainly see in the movies, high flying kicks, and flashy moves.  This will focus on inner strength and speed, fast hands followed with high kicks.  There is also an focus on Weapons mainly the standered "18 arms of wushu" consisting of 18 weapons that wu shu students should be capable of using.
The other version is the styles that have been used in warefare.  Though both are very similar, the ones used in combat have been developed to be extremely brutal and to quickly dispatch enemies. A sport varitaion of kung fu called Sanda, it is similar to moves used in the MMA composing of takedowns, grapples, and quick strikes to vital areas it is a hard hitting style to use.
